Lots of questions still unanswered about Myles Sanderson manhunt

It has been two days since murder suspect Myles Sanderson was captured, but many questions still remain as to how he was able to evade police for four days.

On Sunday, Myles and his brother Damien allegedly killed nine people on the James Smith Cree Nation and one in Weldon. Another 18 people were injured during the rampage.

On Friday morning, Assistant Commissioner Rhonda Blackmore — the commanding officer of the Saskatchewan RCMP — said investigators are still trying to piece together how the events took place.

“We haven’t been advised of or located any other victims. Our investigators are putting that information together,” she said. “On Wednesday, we were in the process and deployed apprehension teams as we were starting to piece together some information and follow up on potential whereabouts of him.

“It’s all (about) putting that together now to make sure we can come up with a timeline at some point in time.”

Myles Sanderson died shortly after being arrested on Highway 11 south of Rosthern.

Blackmore said not having Sanderson alive to answer questions will make creating a timeline more difficult.

“Without having Myles to provide us with that information, it takes a lot longer to put that stuff together, but it’s certainly something we’re working on,” Blackmore added.

Because Sanderson died in police custody, Blackmore said it will be a while before the public hears about how he died.

“Because he’s deceased and was in police custody at the time, under the Saskatchewan legislation, we’re required to engage in an independent investigation on that,” she said.

“I can’t speak to it. I’m not going to interfere. That is now in the hands of the Saskatoon Police Service; they will determine all of that information based on their investigation and the results of the autopsy.”

Blackmore did say Sanderson had an injury to his face when he was arrested, but it’s not clear if that was related to his death.

Police searched Regina for Sanderson after getting a report that the vehicle he was in had been spotted on Arcola Avenue on Sunday. Blackmore said that vehicle has still not been located.

She said there will be a public inquiry or hearing into what all transpired over the last five days.

“We’re always interested in learning best practices and lessons learned. Some of these decisions are made in split seconds and some of them we have a little longer to make those calls. But it’s always a good practice to make sure what went well and what could be done better,” she explained.

“That is going to happen and we’re going to be able to have that information so that, God forbid, somebody has to deal with this again.”
