Underground cartoonist Diane Noomin passed away on September 1, according to a Facebook post by Abrams ComicArts Editorial Director Charlie Kochman. Abrams published Noomin’s last work, the Eisner Award-winning anthology Drawing Power: Women’s Stories of Sexual Violence, Harassment, and Survival, which she edited (see "Eisner Awards 2020").
Noomin’s comics work first appeared in Wimmin’s Comix #2, published in 1973. She was invited to join the title after Aline Kominsky Crumb saw her drawing on a bus, Crumb told us in a 2012 interview (see "Aline Crumb on Women Cartoonists"). After a falling-out with other Wimmen’s Comix creators, Crumb and Noomin broke off and started bad girl comic Twisted Sisters, to which they both contributed, in 1975.
Noomin continued to produce comics work into the 2000s, often featuring her best-known character Didi Glitz, which was collected in a trade paperback collection by Fantagraphics Books in 2012.
She was married to underground cartoonist and Zippy the Pinhead creator Bill Griffith.
Our condolences to family and friends.
