Search and rescue personnel kept busy in Sabah

KOTA KINABALU: Rescuers had to be called in to help an elderly man who slipped and fell while climbing Mount Kinabalu.

State Fire and Rescue Department assistant director of operations Misran Bisara said they were alerted about the incident at 10.05am on Wednesday. He said a mountain search and rescue (Mosar) team was dispatched together with mountain porters and personnel from Sabah Parks to locate the Malaysian, 60, at KM6 on the summit trail.

“As soon as they found him, the team gave the man initial treatment for his injuries,” he said when contacted yesterday.

The team then escorted the man to the Timpohon Gate, where he received more treatment, he added.

In an unrelated incident, firemen had to be called in to help cut off a ring that was stuck on the finger of a 16-year-old boy in the Tawau east coast district later the same day.

Misran said his men had to bring special sawing equipment after being notified by Tawau Hospital on the incident at 4.48pm. He said firemen took about an hour to release the ring from the boy’s finger.

He said firemen also helped free a one-year-old girl who was trapped inside a locked vehicle in the southwestern Sipitang district at 6.40pm.
