This week on Dezeen, a mass-timber skyscraper in Milwaukee was certified as the world's tallest timber building.

Designed by Wisconsin studio Korb + Associates Architects, the 86.6-metre-tall residential tower was made primarily from cross-laminated timber and glulam with a concrete base, elevator and stair shafts.

It was certified as the world's tallest timber building by the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat, just overtaking the 85.4-metre-high Mjøstårnet tower in Norway to claim the title.

In other US skyscraper news, we looked forward to a series of supertall skyscrapers that are set to be built in cities across USA and Canada.

Supertall skyscrapers, which are buildings over 300 metres, are currently being planned for Miami, Toronto, Seattle, Chicago and Austin.

Following the news that Saudi Arabia is planning to build a linear city for nine million people, we rounded up 10 futuristic mega cities that are being proposed for locations around the world.

Some of the world's best-known studios, including BIG, Foster + Partners and OMA, are masterplanning the futuristic urban centres.

In design news, German car company Volkswagen launched an electric update to its iconic 1950s van.

Named the ID Buzz, the all-electric retro vehicle was informed by the T1 Transporter, which was first launched in the 1950s.

In the UK, architect Muyiwa Oki was elected to be the next president of the Royal Institute of British Architects.

Oki, who is 31, will be the institution's first Black president as well as its youngest.

In an opinion column published this week, Jerry Tate argued that a revival of the high-tech architectural style could contribute to decarbonising the built environment 

"As a design method rooted in environmental sustainability, high-tech could have clear advantages for helping our profession tackle the global issues we need to address in all of our work," he said.

Popular architecture projects this week include a house designed by Tom Kundig with a metal "treehouse", Sam Jacob Studio's glass-tube entrance to London's V&A museum and a snake-like apartment complex in Mexico.
