Crystal Lake Police and Fire/Rescue responded about 7:03 p.m. Wednesday, July 27, 2022 to a report that an SUV crashed into a residence, resulting in injuries in the block of 100 Heather Drive in Crystal Lake. The SUV was apparently not involved in a crash with any other vehicles.
The adult male driver of the vehicle was extricated from the vehicle by Crystal Lake Fire/Rescue, and subsequently flown with life threatening injuries to Level 1 Trauma Center Advocate Condell Medical Center. An adult residing at the house that was struck by the SUV was also extricated from debris, and was also flown by a medical helicopter with life threatening injuries to Level 1 Trauma Center Advocate Condell Medical Center.
Thursday morning, ABC 7 Chicago’s Diane Patheiu reported that the man’s son needs multiple back surgeries, and may not walk again. The man was taking a shower in his house when the crash occurred.
The landing zone was located at West Elementary School at the northwest corner of Ballard Road and Briarwood Road. One patient was transported by a MERCYHEALTH REACT helicopter out of Rockford to Level 1 Trauma Center Advocate Condell Medical Center. The first patient was transferred from an ambulance to the REACT Helicopter at about 7:50 p.m. The REACT Helicopter took off for the hospital at about 8:03 p.m.
A second helicopter was assigned to stand by at about 7:37 p.m. The second helicopter was assigned to launch and respond at about 7:56 p.m. The second patient was extricated about 7:59 p.m. The second helicopter may have been at the landing zone at about 8:15 p.m.
A portion of Briarwood Road and Ballard Road were shut down briefly while emergency crews worked on the scene. Nicor and the Crystal Lake Building Department were also assigned to the scene.
The preliminary investigation revealed an SUV was heading eastbound on Ballard Road, when for unknown reasons the vehicle continued through the T-intersection with Briarwood Road before it left the roadway striking a detached garage and residence in the block of 100 Heather Drive. The intersection of Ballard Road and Briarwood Road is a T-type intersection with Briarwood Road located parallel along the property line west of the backyard of the house and garage that was struck.
Following an on-scene investigation the crash is under investigation by the Crystal Lake Accident Investigation Team. The Crystal Lake Police Department encourages anyone who may have information related to the crash to contact the Crystal Lake Police Department at 815-356-3620.
