SRINAGAR: An assistant sub-inspector was killed and two cops were wounded in a terrorist attack at a police checkpost near GD Goenka School in Srinagar’s Lal Bazar area on Tuesday evening.
ASI Mushtaq Ahmad died as terrorists sprayed the checkpost with multiple rounds and escaped.
A head constable and a special police officer (SPO) were wounded. They were admitted to hospital and their condition is said to be stable.
Terrorists have been increasingly targeting policemen in Kashmir, particularly those on leave or off-duty.
Among the deaths, the killing of policeman Saifullah Qadri outside his home in the Soura area of Srinagar on May 24 drew widespread condemnation as his seven-year-old daughter suffered grave wounds in the attack.
Qadri was the third off-duty cop killed in a “targeted attack” this year. On May 13, constable Riyaz Ahmad was shot dead in Pulwama near his home. He was on leave and visiting his family. Before him, terrorists shot dead policeman Ishfaq Ahmad and wounded his brother in central Kashmir’s Budgam district on March 26.
The Budgam attack happened after five policemen, a CRPF trooper and a civilian were wounded in a grenade explosion in Srinagar’s Rainawari area on March 23. According to official data, 16 security personnel died in terrorist strikes in five months till May-end.
