Amarnath Yatra resumes on Baltal route after 4-day break

Amarnath Yatra resumes on Baltal route after 4-day break
SRINAGAR: The Amarnath Yatra, which had been suspended for four days after a cloudburst on Friday (July 8) claimed 15 lives, resumed early Tuesday with more than 7,000 pilgrims leaving the Baltal base camp for the holy cave shrine nestled in the Himalayas around 13,000ft above sea level.
Meanwhile, a senior police officer said all pilgrims who were feared missing in the cloudburst tragedy have been traced while the bodies of the 15 deceased have been identified and dispatched to their native places.

Dismissing rumours of 16 deaths, the officer said: “We recovered only 15 bodies and all of them were identified by their relatives and friends.”
The death toll in the calamity would have been significantly higher had the ‘aarti puja’ at the cave been done at 6.15pm on the fateful day when the gushing waters hit the low-lying camp. Over 200 devotees were participating in the aarti puja at the shrine when the disaster hit.
More than one lakh devotees have visited the holy cave so far this year. The pilgrimage had commenced on June 30.
