Illinois State Police troopers, and firefighters and paramedics from Hoffman Estates responded about 12:23 a.m. Sunday, June 12, 2022 to a report of a rollover crash with injuries in the right shoulder grass on I-90 EAST just between Sutton Road (Route 59) and Higgins Road near Hoffman Estates. Illinois State Police described the location at Mile Marker 61.

A blue GMC Yukon SUV was located overturned on the right shoulder after hitting a barrier and then rolling over. The crash scene was closer to Higgins Road, compared to Sutton Road. Rescuers received a report that a child was inside the overturned vehicle.

The first trooper on arrival confirmed a baby was trapped in the SUV. At least three victims were removed by Illinois State Police troopers by about 12:30 a.m. A Hoffman Estate fire crew on arrival immediately requested three additional ambulances at 12:32 a.m. An adult female remained inside the vehicle unconscious, and was removed a later. The adult female was described as the childrens’ mother, and was extricated about 12:55 a.m. As the scene was brought under control, rescuers discovered that seven children were injured along with an adult female. The ages of the children were later estimated to range from age one to age 14.

Several of the patients were described as infants or toddlers. Initially, there was a report that five patients were transported to Level 1 Trauma Center Advocate Lutheran General Hospital. Other patients were transported to AMITA Health St. Alexius Medical Center Hoffman Estates.

Among the five children at Advocate Lutheran General Hospital, four were transferred by ambulances to Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago with serious to life-threatening injuries. The other child was transferred to Comer Children’s Hospital and that child’s condition was not initially available. Another report indicated the patient that was transferred to Comer Children’s hospital had arrived from Sherman Hospital in Elgin. The conflicting information was complicated due to weather cancellations of medical helicopter transports, which may have required changes to the initial hospital destinations. Also, some reports may not have provided the latest updated information.

Fire department ambulances from Hoffman Estates, Streamwood, West Dundee and East Dundee were assigned to the scene. A Bartlett Fire Protection District ambulance was assigned to stand by in a Hoffman Estates fire station.

One or more medical helicopters were requested overnight for hospital transfers, but foggy conditions grounded the medical transport helicopters.

An Illinois State Police Crash Reconstruction Officer was assigned to the scene. Investigation continued and the two right lanes remained closed until about 4:30 a.m. when the crash investigation was complete.
