According to numerous reports in Johannesburg, lightweight boxer Simiso Buthelezi has passed away after suffering a severe brain bleed during a fight which took place this past weekend in Durban. Boxing South Africa (BSA) confirmed the passing on Wednesday.

Buthelezi was competing in a ten rounder for the World Boxing Federation All Africa lightweight title against compatriot Siphesihle Mntungwa on Sunday.

The contest was quickly waved off when Buthelezi began to move away from Mntungwa and started throwing punches at an invisible opponent.

The video of the scary moment went viral on social media and was covered by media outlets all over the world.

Following the conclusion of the fight, the boxer was rushed to hospital and placed in an induced coma after it was discovered he had bleeding on the brain. 

BSA have confirmed they will undertake an independent medical review of the entire incident and take action if anything inappropriate is discovered. The boxer's trainer, Bheki Mngomezulu, told reporters that Buthelezi had been in perfect health in the lead-up to the bout.

Entering the fight, Buthelezi had a professional record of 4-0 with 2 wins by knockout. He turned professional in 2019. Buthelezi was not overmatched in the contest, with his opponent having a record of 6-1-2 with 3 KOs - and entered the fight on an 0-1-2 run.
