UDAIPUR: Expressing concern over the divisive politics of RSS-BJP, Rahul Gandhi on Sunday said Congress is the only party which can lead the battle to defeat these communal forces, while asserting that regional parties cannot perform this onerous political task.
Assuring party workers of Congress's revival, party chief Sonia Gandhi said, "We will overcome... That is our Nav Sankalp (new resolution).Congress will have a new uday (dawn)." Rahul said the regional parties are built around different aspects but not an ideology, while Congress is a party with a centralized ideology, adding that BJP too is aware of the threat the grand old party poses.

"The regional parties cannot fight this battle because this is an ideological fight. BJP talks about Congress, its leaders, its workers, but not about any regional party. That is because they know that regional parties have a place, but they cannot defeat BJP because they don't have an ideology. We have a centralised approach," Rahul told delegates in his valedictory speech at the 'Chintan Shivir' being held in Udaipur, Rajasthan.

The Gandhi scion's assertion appeared designed to underline the salience of Congress against the rampaging BJP, in view of a crowded opposition space, in which a weakened Congress is facing serious competition from regional players and also newbies like AAP. However, his assertion could also prove provocative for regional outfits, which include some of Congress's allies. At one point, he also said that regional parties belong to some castes, while Congress is truly national.

Rahul highlighted two deficiencies in Congress, saying that it is way behind BJP in its messaging and that its traditional connect with people is broken. He suggested an upgrade in communication strategy and also urged leaders and workers to go to people and stay with them for sustained periods. "We have to accept the break in our connect with people, and we have to restore it," he said.

He said BJP was not allowing a "conversation" between people, accusing it of capturing institutions that are instruments which enable it. "The only alternative to a conversation between people of India is violence ," he said.

Rahul said the judiciary, election commission, media are being pressurised by the ruling party. He said the RSS was infiltrating all institutions through its workers, while Congress has never done such a "subversion".
