After brief respite, fresh spell of heat wave likely to commence from 7 May - IMD's latest forecast

New Delhi: After brief respite from scorching heat, a fresh spell of heat wave is set to hit northwest India from 7 May (Saturday) and over central India from 8th May, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) informed on Thursday. Rainfall in some parts during the last two days brought the mercury down, bringing respite from severe heat waves that struck the country in the last few weeks.
On Wednesday, rainfall happened over Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, West Uttar Pradesh and Marathwada.
The IMD said that maximum temperatures (42-44 degrees Celsius) were reported over most parts of Vidarbha; in some parts of Madhya Pradesh and in isolated pockets of Gujarat, Marathwada, Madhya Maharashtra and West Uttar Pradesh. Rajasthan, Haryana, Delhi, Telangana, Jharkhand and northern parts of Odisha saw temperatures between 40-42 degrees Celsius.
Today, the weather forecasting agency said that a fresh spell of heat wave conditions is likely to commence over Northwest India from Saturday and over central India from Sunday. Rajasthan is likely to witness heat waves during 7th-9th May. South Haryana, Delhi, southwest Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and Vidarbha will see heat waves on 8th and 9thMay, 2022.
The IMD has also said that under the influence of a western disturbance, light rainfall is very likely over Jammu, Kashmir, Ladakh, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand during the next 3 days. Also, isolated light rainfall with thunderstorms is very likely over Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and West Rajasthan on Thursday.
The weather office has predicted formation of a low pressure area over South Andaman Sea on 6th May and intensification into depression during subsequent 48 hours with northwestwards movement.
Rainfall is also likely over Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura during the next 5 days.
The IMD has also forecast rainfall in Southern India. It said heavy rainfall is very likely over south interior Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Karaikal and Kerala today.
