Flagship Galaxy smartphones have a secret weapon when it comes to capturing the very best photo quality and Samsung’s latest free upgrade promises to deliver even better results.

That secret weapon is Samsung’s Expert RAW app, which enables compatible handsets to shoot in a higher-quality format similar to Apple’s ProRAW feature, introduced with the iPhone 12 Pro.

In upgrading Expert RAW to version 1.0.01, Samsung promises enhanced clarity in extreme low light, which is one of the key areas where shooting in a raw format has significant advantages. The app also provides a range of advanced camera controls such as ISO and shutter speed settings, bringing this functionality to all of the phone’s camera lenses.

Shooting in raw mode isn’t for everyone. While it’s capable of delivering far superior image quality, it also creates much larger image files that will need to be processed before they can be shared. However, it’s their suitability for editing which gives raw files their greatest strength, allowing you to achieve the best detail along with much more control over light and shadow than would be available with a standard jpeg file. You can read more about raw files in my Pixel Binning explainer.

All Galaxy S22 models will work with Expert RAW as well as the Galaxy S21 Ultra, Galaxy Z Fold 3, Galaxy Z Fold 2 and Galaxy Note 20 Ultra. Owners of compatible Samsung devices can download the app from the Galaxy Store now.
