BEAUFORT: An elderly woman died in a collision with another vehicle in Kg Takuli, Km 11, Jalan Beaufort-Menumbok, near here.

District Police Chief Yusoff Zaki Yaakob said the victim driving a Perodua Kancil was identified as Mazdah Guntar, 72.

“Preliminary investigation showed the accident occurred when the driver of a Toyota Yaris that was coming from the opposite direction lost control and entered the right lane which the victim was on before colliding with the front of the Kancil.

“The Kancil driver was seriously injured and died while receiving treatment in the Beaufort Hospital, while the Yaris driver escaped unscathed,” he said, adding firefighters at the scene had to take time to remove the victim trapped in the Kancil. According to Yusoff Zaki, both vehicles sustained severe frontal damage and the driver of the Yaris was arrested for further investigation under Section 41(1) of the APJ 1987.

Meanwhile, District Fire and Rescue Chief Mohammad Hasbullah Nenggok said a four-wheel-drive vehicle crashed into a ditch in Kg Padas Valley along the main road between Beaufort and Sipitang at 4.30pm.

He said the department discovered that the victim, in his 50s, had escaped on his own before firefighters arrived at the scene where the Mazda was believed to have skidded on its own.
