Extra Alarm Fire Destroys Discount Outlet on Lawrence Ave Chicago

Police, firefighters and paramedics from Chicago responded about 12:00 p.m. Tuesday, March 22, 2022 to a report of a fire at the Jojo Discount Store at 3040 West Lawrence Avenue in Chicago. Engine 124’s crew on arrival reported a fire in a 1-story ordinary commercial building. Chicago Fire Department described the fire scene at Jojo discount store as having a heavy fire load with a truss roof. No injuries were reported.

Battalion 10 on arrival and in command reported a 1-story bowstring truss building about 150×75 with fire already in the trusses, and called for a Still and Box Alarm about 12:07 p.m. A main ladder from a ladder truck was up by 12:10 p.m. and ground ladders were placed on the left side of the building.

Around noon, crews responded to the extra-alarm fire in the 3000 block of West Lawrence Avenue Tuesday afternoon at the Jojo Discount Outlet Home Store YouTube Tips ⓘ

A 2-11 Alarm was requested at 12:15 p.m. on orders of Battalion 10 when firefighters evacuated the interior of the building and went defensive. Battalion 10 announced the offensive fire was lost. All fire crews were off the roof and accounted for by about 12:13 p.m.

Deputy District Chief 2-2-2 took command and reported they are fighting a fire in a 75×150 building, and were repositioning some hose lines and apparatus. The fire was located in the middle of the building in the roof truss.

A 3-11 Alarm was requested at about 1:09 p.m.




The fire caused a roof collapse, which was reported at 1:22 p.m. while six master streams were pouring water on the fire.

At about 3:47 p.m. there were still five master streams hitting hot spots from the front of the building, and one master stream and two hand lines were used to hit hots spots from the back of the building.

Smoke was still rising from the building at 5:00 p.m.

Lawrence Avenue was still closed to traffic in both directions between Kedzie Avenue and Francisco Avenue/Virginia Avenue.
