Issue of compensation to kin of farmers who died during year-long protest lies with state governments: Agriculture minister
NEW DELHI: The central government on Tuesday told the Lok Sabha that the issue of compensation to the families of the farmers who died during the year-long movement rested with the concerned state governments, while remaining silent on the question of whether it had the list of those who died in the agitation.
In a written reply to the House on four related questions raised by Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Deepak Adhikary and Congress member Anumula Revanth Reddy, Union agriculture minister Narendra Singh Tomar said, “The subject of compensation etc.

to the families of the deceased farmers in the farmers’ movement is with the concerned state governments.”
The questions to the minister were: “(a) whether the government has collected the names/details of the farmers who died during the farmers’ protests across the country in the past year; (b) if so, the details thereof and if not, the reasons therefore; (c) whether the government plans to give compensation to the farmers who died during the farmers’ protests; and (d) if so, the details thereof and if not, the reasons therefore…
With a single line reply, the minister avoided replying to the question on whether the Centre had acquired the list of names and the details of the farmers who died during the movement.
This came a day after the Samyukta Kisan Morcha announced its plans to begin the second phase of the farmers’ movement with the demand for guaranteed MSP on crops, against “protection of those responsible for the Lakhimpur Kheri killings” and the non-implementation of assurances given to them by the government even after three months.
Earlier, in the midst of the agitation the Centre had replied to the House that it did not have the list of people who died during the movement.

In another reply to a question on the status of the NRC, Nityanand Rai, minister for state for home affairs, said on Tuesday that till now, the government has not taken any decision to prepare the National Register of Indian Citizens (NRIC). “On the direction of the Supreme Court, the supplementary list of inclusions and the list of exclusions for NRC, Assam, have been published on 31st August, 2019.”
He was asked by TMC member Mala Roy about “the status of having a National Register of Citizens for the entire country; and the time by when the work related to NRC will be done, along with the status of the NRC in Assam”.
