Shipping times are incredibly influential on buyers. 67% of US consumers expect same-, next- or two-day shipping.
This puts a lot of pressure on merchants to offer short shipping windows, which is really tough when you're also managing suppliers, marketing campaigns, and customer support in between trips to the post office.
That challenge is what drove us to build Shopify Fulfillment Network. It connects you with trusted 3PL partners who take care of storing, packing, and shipping to save you time that can be better spent growing your business. And it makes it easier and more affordable to offer 2-day delivery, so you can meet those growing buyer expectations, build brand affinity, and keep customers coming back.
Wondering how Shopify Fulfillment Network can help you get orders into your customers' hands quickly and keep them coming back?
Let's take a look at the journey of an order as it gets delivered.
Step 1: Your customer completes an order
Cha-ching! Congrats! You made another sale. They just couldn't resist that 2-day delivery!
If this happens five, 10, or a few dozen times per day, you may want to seek out a helping hand in the form of a third-party logistics provider. Shopify Fulfillment Network connects you with trusted 3PL partners like Flexport, ShipBob, and ShipMonk—all integrated into your Shopify admin. The alternative tends to be a home full of inventory, boxes, shipping supplies, and the wagon you use to take loads of packages to and from your car.
When you connect with a fulfillment partner through Shopify Fulfillment Network, you ship your merchandise to their strategically-located warehouses. This is called an inbound transfer or inbound shipment. Your 3PL partner will guide you step-by-step.
Once your inbound shipment is received, your inventory is distributed and balanced across your partner's network of warehouses. They optimize your SKU placement so goods are closer to your buyers, which saves on shipping time and costs. And as orders come through, inventory is continuously relocated to better manage your entire supply chain and help you exceed customer expectations.
Of course, you're kept in the loop the entire way. From inventory needs to daily sales, everything you need to know is synced right into Shopify.
With your goods inbounded and distributed across the network, your fulfillment partner goes to work.
Your latest sale triggers a fulfillment order notification at the warehouse closest to your customer and sets the rest of the process in motion.
Step 2: The picking process begins
Once the order notification is received, your 3PL partner will immediately evaluate the order to make sure it can be fulfilled. This means that the address is correct, there's enough inventory in stock, and fulfillment isn't paused for any reason. It's at this point that the best shipping options are automatically determined, but we'll cover that in more detail below.
The order information is then sent to the warehouse floor, where fulfillment specialists use advanced picking systems to locate and gather your inventory quickly. Many 3PL partners use robotics and AI-powered systems to pick inventory 2-3 times faster than the industry standard.
These streamlined picking processes allow fulfillment partners to hit those high-converting 2-day delivery windows.
Step 3: The warehouse packs the order
At the packing station, a fulfillment specialist packs your order nice and snug into the smallest possible box, bag, or envelope. Then it's time to label it for shipping.
Shipping rates are complicated. They depend on package sizes, weights, carriers, location, and more. This is unsurprisingly one of the hardest parts of self-shipping, especially if you want to offer customers free shipping and are trying to bake those rates into your prices.
What you might not know is that carriers will often give preferable, discounted rates to high-volume shippers like established 3PL partners.
With that in mind, as soon as the order comes in, your fulfillment partner's software identifies the cheapest rates on 2-day delivery, saving you (and your customers) money.
Once the order is packed, the shipping label is printed and applied.
This entire packing process takes only a few minutes.
Step 4: The carrier picks up the order and delivers it to your customer
Many 3PL partners offer 2-day delivery, and also same-day fulfillment. That means that if your order comes in before 2p.m. in the warehouse's local timezone, it will get handed off to a carrier by the end of that same day. This is achieved through fast picking and packing, but also through strong partnerships with shipping carriers.
In addition to offering preferred shipping rates, these carriers pickup orders from fulfillment warehouses each and every day. And established 3PL partners don't just rely on a single carrier; they work with a number of shipping partners to ensure they can always deliver at high speeds and affordable rates, including:
- USPS
- DHL
- UPS
- Canada Post
"When we were unexpectedly featured on Prime Time National TV on Cyber Monday our sales spiked to more than 16x our average and both Shopify and Shopify Fulfillment Network handled the surge in traffic and orders perfectly. We heard from many happy customers 2-days later that they'd already received their order!" - Jimmy MacDonald, CFA, Co-Founder, Authenticity50
Also worth noting: you can ship internationally through many fulfillment partners, but not always on the same 2-day delivery timeline.

Shopify 2 Day Shipping FAQ
How much does 2-day shipping cost on Shopify?
The cost of offering 2-day shipping on Shopify depends largely on whether you fulfill orders in-house or through a third-party logistics partner, and expenses can climb quickly if you're not prepared. Costs accrued from fast shipping can add up quickly when trying to achieve it in-house, covering warehousing, packaging, and premium carrier rates. A full-service fulfillment partner typically charges two fees instead: storage costs charged per cubic foot per month, plus fulfillment costs based on weight and dimensions that cover handling, picking, and packing. Working with an established 3PL often lowers per-order costs through negotiated carrier rates.
How do you set up 2-day shipping in Shopify?
You set up 2-day shipping by creating a shipping rate in Shopify admin under Settings, then linking it to an expedited carrier option or a fulfillment partner integration. From there, you create a shipping profile, add the rate, choose a carrier or app-calculated pricing option, and select which shipping methods appear to customers at checkout. You can also enter a custom transit time, such as a 2-day estimate, so shoppers see an accurate delivery window before paying. Pairing this setup with a fulfillment partner keeps those delivery promises realistic at scale.
Do you need your own warehouse to offer 2-day shipping?
No—many sellers offer 2-day shipping without any warehouse space by outsourcing fulfillment to a third-party logistics partner instead of storing inventory themselves. In-house fulfillment is cheaper for small-scale stores with low order volumes, typically fulfilling orders from home or office and saving on storage costs. As order volume grows, home fulfillment becomes harder to sustain, and 3PL partners with their own warehouse networks take over storage, picking, and packing so a dedicated facility isn't required.
Does 2-day shipping work for international orders?
International 2-day shipping is possible but far less common, since customs processing and longer transit distances make tight delivery windows harder to guarantee. Air shipping, which moves packages by plane, is mainly used for international orders or customers far from a fulfillment center, and its steep costs make free two-day shipping difficult to offer. Many fulfillment partners support international orders, but typically on extended timelines rather than the same guaranteed 2-day window used domestically.
What can delay a 2-day delivery?
A handful of factors outside normal processing can push a delivery past its 2-day window, even when picking and packing happen quickly. Statutory holidays and warehouse closures affect when a package can be ready for shipment, and unexpected events like severe weather can force fulfillment centers to close. Shipping carriers such as UPS and USPS also have their own holidays and closures that affect pickup and transport timing. Choosing a fulfillment partner with multiple warehouse locations and carrier relationships reduces the chances of these delays.
How can you offer 2-day shipping without raising prices?
You can offer 2-day shipping without passing costs to customers by shifting expenses into product pricing, loyalty programs, or a fulfillment partner's negotiated carrier rates instead of a per-order surcharge. One cosmetics retailer offers loyal customers free shipping once they accrue 1,000 loyalty points, using the resulting higher average order value to help fund the free 2-day shipping. Building shipping costs into product prices or setting a minimum order value are other common ways sellers protect margins while still promising fast delivery.
