AFC West Weekly: Broncos, Raiders have decisions to make at QB

We’re back with another update for Kansas City Chiefs fans on AFC West rivals. Each week we highlight six recent and relevant stories about Kansas City’s division rivals: two stories each about the Denver Broncos, Las Vegas Raiders and Los Angeles Chargers.

Below you’ll find stories from this past week.

Terrell Davis thinks Aaron Rodgers will join Broncos in 2022

“Until Rodgers makes a decision, though, all we can do is speculate. And that’s exactly what Pro Football Hall of Fame running back Terrell Davis did during a recent interview with FanDuel’s Lisa Kerney.”

Don’t expect this Rodgers-to-Denver talk to go away anytime soon. This situation will probably take some time as Rodgers tries to build his value. If he doesn’t end up staying with the Packers, the Broncos do seem like a good fit. Rodgers will just have to be okay with playing Patrick Mahomes and Justin Herbert twice a year.

Tim Patrick wants Von Miller to sign with Broncos in free agency

Ron Chenoy-USA TODAY Sports

“The Rams would like to re-sign Miller, but it wouldn’t be surprising if the 32-year-old edge defender opts to test free agency this spring. That would leave the door open for the possibility of Miller returning to the Denver Broncos.”

Many Broncos fans are hoping Miller will return to Denver after winning a Super Bowl with the Los Angeles Rams. That outcome seems like a good possibility, but I wouldn’t necessarily rule out Miller considering the Chiefs as well. Kansas City will be in the market for a pass rusher and Miller has praised Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes in the past. Might it be time that Miller joins up with Mahomes for one last run?

ESPN projects QB Derek Carr will sign extension with Raiders this offseason

Kyle Terada-USA TODAY Sports

“The insiders expanded on their thoughts on Carr, saying the Raiders would be wise to extend him for one or two more years with nearly all of his contract being guaranteed.”

Honestly, this is the best scenario for the Chiefs. Why? Because Carr is 3-13 in his career against Kansas City. Sure, Carr has put together good seasons in the past. He just hasn’t yet shown that he can be the guy to take Las Vegas to the Super Bowl (or win a postseason game for that matter). An extension for Carr would be much more preferable for Chiefs fans over the Raiders picking up a guy like Rodgers or Russell Wilson.

What condition Raiders wide receiver position is in heading into free agency 2022

Condition: Critical. Jones and Jackson are headed for free agency, which would leave the Raiders with essentially no legitimate outside receiver. Keeping either or both of them would yield the same result.”

Much like the Chiefs, the Raiders will be on the hunt for a No. 2 receiver this offseason. Vegas has breakout star Hunter Renfrow as their top receiver, but that won’t be enough to compete in the AFC West. It’ll be interesting to see whether the Raiders decide to draft a guy or sign a high-profile free agent receiver.

What are Chargers' odds to win Super Bowl LVII?

Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports

“At the moment, the Chargers are tied with six other teams for the sixth-best odds to win it all at +2000, per Tipico Sportsbook.”

The Chargers seem to be an offseason favorite every year, so it’s not surprising to see their Super Bowl odds set so high. It seems warranted this time around — despite barely missing the playoffs, Los Angeles is in prime position to compete at a high level for the foreseeable future as long as quarterback Justin Herbert is at the helm.

3 pending free agents from Rams the Chargers should try to add in free agency

Ron Chenoy-USA TODAY Sports

“The Chargers could be in the market for a pass rusher opposite Joey Bosa … While [Chargers coach Brandon] Staley did not coach [Von] Miller when he was with the Rams, they know each other very well from their time together with the Broncos in 2019.”

The Broncos won’t be the only AFC West team looking at Miller — the Chargers could be in the mix as well. Regardless, expect the Chargers to be very active in free agency this offseason. They have a ton of salary cap space and will want to bring in some playmakers to contend for a Super Bowl, much like their Los Angeles counterparts (the Rams) did to win Super Bowl LVI.
