Ford announces sustainability efforts in EV battery manufacturing, water recycling

Ford Motor Co. has announced it is strengthening its partnership with Redwood Materials in identifying solutions for electric vehicle batteries that have reached the end of their useful lives. The program is intended to help the automaker achieve sustainable, carbon-neutral EV manufacturing and ultimately help make EVs more environmentally responsible.

The company also announced that the U.S. EPA Region 4 has presented its Louisville Assembly Plant with a 2021 Pollution Prevention Award in recognition of the plant’s commitment to practices that reduce, eliminate, or prevent pollution at its source, specifically for a new water recycling initiative developed by plant employees.

In 2020 the Louisville Assembly Plant began implementing a pollution prevention project to reuse treated wastewater in the paint pretreatment process. During the first year of implementation, the plant reduced more than 5 million gal. of city water use. Reusing wastewater builds on the more than 12.5 billion gal. of water Ford has saved to date through water conservation and recycling programs since 2000.
