NEW DELHI: The government has approved continuation of its umbrella scheme for modernisation of police forces for five more years from 2020-21 to 2025-26, with a central outlay of Rs 26,275 crore for all relevant sub schemes aimed at modernising and improving functioning of police forces of states and UTs.
The extended scheme makes provisions for internal security, law and order function, adoption of modern technologies by the police, assistance to states for narcotics control and strengthening the criminal justice system.
While the central outlay for reimbursement of security-related expenditure for J&K, insurgency-hit areas of northeastern states and left-wing extremism-affected states has been fixed at Rs 18,839 crore, Rs 4,846 crore has been earmarked for the scheme for modernisation of state police forces. A Rs 8,689-crore outlay have been approved for the 'national policy and action plan' for combating left wing extremism. The schemes include the special central assistance to most-affected LWE districts and districts of concern.
