Sweden's spent nuclear fuel repository decision made after years of debate
SKB, the Swedish Nuclear Fuel and Waste Management Company, has assured the public that its method to provide a final storage place for radioactive spent nuclear fuel is "a safe and secure solution".
Sweden, like many other countries, has been looking at ways to safely store its highly radioactive used nuclear fuel for generations to come.
On Thursday, the government approved SKB's plan to place the spent nuclear fuel in iron and copper cannisters and bury them deep in a series of tunnels 500 metres underground.
