How Havaianas Found its Footing on Social Media

One of the only things more recognizable than the sound of flip-flop sandals is the brand that makes them: Havaianas. Headquartered in São Paulo, the footwear manufacturer seeks to highlight its vibrant Brazilian roots through a range of sandals and other lifestyle accessories.

In any given year, the company sells millions of pairs of sandals. Helping drive these sales is a robust marketing and social media strategy conceived by their global head of media, Juliana Arruda, and its head of content and creative studio, Laura Marquez.

"We used to take a campaign made for offline media and adopt that for social media," Laura says. "What we do now is use a specific format for each platform."

Investing in a tailor-made social strategy has allowed Havaianas to create content that resonates with their customers on the platforms where they spend their time. It has also helped the Brazilian brand launch multiple new campaigns focused on building an online community and increasing sales.

Most notable? The flip-flop challenge, where Havaianas partnered with creators around the world to promote their products on Facebook and Instagram. Havaianas handed over creative control to the creators with one request: to give customers the best experience possible on social media.

While the creators were posting vibrant content on Facebook and Instagram, the Havaianas marketing team was busy extending the campaign by promoting it outside of Meta's technologies. This social media strategy proved to be a major success, as it worked to double sales, increase conversions and lower their cost per click.

"It's important to plan at first," says Laura. "Then after you plan a little bit, it's important to actually do it. Sometimes it's not going to be the best work you do, but it's going to be the first of many, and you’re going to get better and better."
