Congress netas, actors booked over padayatra
The Karnataka government slapped cases of pandemic rules violation on Monday against 31 people that included Congress politicians and Kannada actors who were at Sunday’s inauguration of the party’s 10-day padayatra on the Mekedatu reservoir project.
The action followed criticism of the government for not preventing the political event at Mekedatu, with people asking if rules were different for the common man and politicians. There’s a weekend curfew in place in Karnataka to prevent the recent spurt in coronavirus infections going out of control.
State Congress president DK Shivakumar, senior politicians Siddaramaiah and M Mallikarjun Kharge, and actors Duniya Vijay and Sadhu Kokila are among those facing charges of norms violation. “Filing the case is the first step. Other steps will follow as per law. We will not spare anyone,” said CM Basavaraj Bommai. Shivakumar remained unperturbed. “We won’t be deterred by the cases and will continue with our padayatra. The government is trying hard to sabotage our yatra,” he said. He alleged the government was filing cases selectively. “Several BJP members attended programmes violating norms. Renukacharya (CM’s political secretary) was at a bull race on Sunday. Why no cases were filed against them?”
