Adam McKay’s new Netflix film Don’t Look Up has the kind of sprawling ensemble cast that really makes you go, “…Well!” A movie starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Lawrence sounds like a big enough deal, but add in Meryl Streep, Tyler Perry, Ron Perlman, Timothée Chalamet, Cate Blanchett, Ariana Grande, and Kid Cudi, and you’ve got yourself a recipe for maximum wildness. Accordingly, none of the fashion at the film’s world premiere last night made any sense. DiCaprio and Lawrence wore glitzy formalwear; Hill and his girlfriend Sarah Brady made their red-carpet debut in matching chiller blue suits; and Cudi arrived as only Cudi could, in a safety orange Balenciaga hoodie, Gucci x Balenciaga Hacker Project puffer jacket, and humongous Vetements teddy bear slippers.
Cudi’s look is operating on multiple levels here: aside from paying homage to the various legacies of Demna Gvasalia, it also falls in line with his headline-generating style as of late, and the pièce de résistance slippers remind us that ’tis the season for absolute-unit footwear. Bafflingly, actor Henry Winkler tweeted out his approval of Cudi’s shoe choice. (Apparently they once flew on the same plane? Knowledge is power!) Not to mention, Vetements has long been synonymous with outrageous, both in terms of stylistic proportions and sticker shock. The same slippers and their $2,090 price tag—though they’re currently 39% off at SSENSE, if you act fast—already had a whole plotline on the latest season of The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills, when housewife Sutton Stracke wore them on a trip to Lake Tahoe and the rest of the ladies roasted her for spending four figures on house shoes, which the internet later likened to roadkill.
Elsewhere is this outrageous fit, the handwritten “Willis5000” on the sweatshirt is a phrase Cudi tweeted not long ago alongside a picture of himself at this year’s Met Gala, though he’s given no further explanation on what it means thus far. Which makes the teddy bear slippers seem pretty obvious in comparison.
