Illinois State Police apprehended a suspect connected to an aggravated vehicular hijacking after he was tracked in a white Ford Fusion for about 90 minutes, beginning about 10:14 p.m. Friday, December 3, 2021. An Illinois State Trooper reported he was following a white Ford Fusion connected to an aggravated vehicular hijacking case when the track began. After a trooper detected the carjacked vehicle on northbound I-294, the suspect traveled on surface streets and expressways before being apprehended.

The suspect exited I-294 northbound on Morgan near Van Buren, then Jackson Boulevard, then Monroe Street. The suspect then traveled westbound on Madison Street, and continued traveling on surface streets in Chicago. The driver was described as a male/black wearing a puffy jacket.

The suspect entered westbound I-290 WEST at Van Buren about 10:24 p.m. and continued westbound on I-290, traveling about 70 MPH. The suspect entered I-294 southbound from I-290 WEST at about 10:35 p.m., then looped around northbound I-294 at Cermak Road.

The suspect merged to I-190 WEST and back to I-294 southbound about 10:48 p.m. and then exited toward I-88 WEST at about 10:56 p.m.

The suspect entered I-88 WEST about 10:58 p.m. and exited at northbound Route 53 about 11:05 p.m. He pulled into the Walmart parking lot near Butterfield Road past the Morton Arboretum. The suspect did some laps in the Walmart parking lot, and then headed southbound on Route 53. The suspect entered I-88 EAST by about 11:09 p.m. and eventually exited to I-294 southbound at about 11:15 p.m.

Spike strips were set up on I-294 near the I-55 interchange, and the suspect’s front-left tire got spiked at about 11:22 p.m. The suspect also hit a semi-trailer truck, but kept driving southbound on I-294. Police were not in pursuit, but were observing while following the suspect. The suspect continued, driving with no left, front tire at about 70 MPH. At about 11:24 p.m. a tire from the Ford Fusion rolled free down Interstate 294. Next, the Ford Fusion was driven with two left tires missing on rims with sparks flying.

The driver left I-294 to exit to 127th Street westbound. He looped around Central Avenue northbound to Cal Sag Road, where he turned right to head southeast back toward 127th Street. The suspect turned left to travel eastbound on 127th Street and then crashed at 127th Street and Cicero Avenue in Alsip, Illinois at about 11:36 p.m. The driver was in custody by 11:37 p.m.
