Hello Team,

I hope you  are doing all right, and keeping safe.

I have an important issue to share with you about a project I am working on at the moment, and any reply would be much appreciated as I'm due to submit by next Wednesday.

I need to work on a 4D animation in Bentley Synchro, and my usual process is to collate the different models (Revit architectural, Revit structural, and I usually model the context and landscape on 3ds Max). I have received the structural model from the structural engineers (Revit 2019), and I am not able to open it with my Revit 2022.

[A] When I try to open it, I need to upgrade it, then I am notified that once upgraded I cannot synchronise it to the central model anymore [see Capture1], and once I confirm to close, I receive the error message ""Can't obtain permission to edit the element: The Central Model is inaccessible" [see Capture2] and "Two elements were not automatically joined because one or both is not editable" [see Capture3], and that the project load was cancelled [see Capture4].

[B] I have tried to open the Revit 2019 file with 3ds Max (2022), with the option of not combining and combining categories and materials, and I can see some workable geometry, although many parts are missing (columns, beams, bracing and all substructure) which is not good [see Capture5].

The structural engineers sent the IFC file as well (exported from the Revit file), so I tried to link the IFC file on Revit but I couldn't graphically locate the geometry in Revit, also after binding and ungrouping it. So I tried to:

[C] save the Revit 2022 file as project, and open it with 3ds Max, with the option of not combining and combining categories and materials. In this case, I can see the whole geometry, but it is not workable as it looks corrupt [see Capture5];

[D] export the FBX file, and open it with 3ds Max, with the option of not combining and combining categories and materials. As before, I can see the whole geometry, but it is not workable as it looks corrupt [see Capture5].

We spoke to the structural engineers, suggesting them these to threads as well:
a) https://forums.autodesk.com/t5/revit-mep-forum/can-t-open-model-get-error-quot-you-do-not-have-permi...

b) https://knowledge.autodesk.com/support/revit/troubleshooting/caas/sfdcarticles/sfdcarticles/Revit-Ca...

The structural engineers said that they had no issues on their side, and they asked two different external colleagues to check the original Revit model and they were able to open them successfully.

For the sake of completeness, I was able to visualise the IFC file on Synchro4D, although it is not very useful as I need to coordinate both the architectural model (that I'll receive from the architects) and the context/landscape (that I modelled myself) either in Revit either in 3ds Max.

I hope somebody could help me with this, as it's quite urgent. Thank you very much for your time and help in advance.

Kind regards,

Pier

Hi ennujozlagam ,

Thanks a lot for the reply. I'm not too sure that the case you posted applies to mine, as I'm not working my bit on a local file that then is connected to a central file that gets synchronised.
I received the final structural model from the structural engineers, and I need to work on that independently, for my visualisation purposes: I won't be changing anything design-wise, but I'll be just working on the phasing of it.

I'll try anyway to feed it back to the structural engineers, in case it's got useful information for them on how to export the file, like the Lighting Analysis add-in issue.

I have included a break-down of the error, so it could be more detailed  [see Capture7]. If I tick the box, and Cancel or Delete checked, the model won't load.

Thanks for your time.

Best,

Pier

The issue is not from your end, it is from their end.

  1. First they need to make sure that all members of their team have synced and relinquished all element
  2. They need to forward you the model using one of the following methods:
    • eTransmit
    • Detach from Central then forward that including links
  3. If model is cloud based they need to Save As on a local drive (as a new Central) then either of the methods mentioned in 2 above

PS: In case they are forwarding you a detached model,

  • you will need to reload links
  • you will need to inform them whether you need it workshared with preserved workset or not and with no worksets
