DUI Drugs Charge for Wisconsin Woman Involved in Fatal Head-On Crash on Route 31 in McHenry County that Killed Elmhurst Woman

Alyssa Popp, 31, of Fort Atkinson, Wisconsin, was charged Thursday, November 18, 2021 with aggravated driving under the influence of drugs where a death resulted, driving under the influence of drugs, and improper lane use just over three months after a fatal crash she is accused of causing. She was booked in McHenry County Jail at 2:48 p.m. Saturday, November 20, 2021, and was released on bond at 4:52 p.m. Saturday, November 20, 2021. She posted 10% ($15,000) of the $150,000 bond.




The alleged DUI crash occurred about 10:20 a.m. Saturday, August 7, 2021 in the block of 4300 Route 31 between the northwest suburban Village of Ringwood and Johnsburg to the south and the City of McHenry to the north, causing the death of Christina Smith, 56, of Elmhurst.

An investigation by the McHenry County sheriff’s office indicated that Popp was driving a black 2021 GMC Acadia northbound on Route 31, while Smith was driving a white 2015 Acura TLX southbound on Route 31. Popp crossed the center line of Route 31 in her GMC Arcadia, and collided head-on with the Acura TLX. Smith was pronounced dead at the scene.




Alyssa Popp was transported by ambulance to Northwestern Medicine McHenry Hospital, and then transferred by helicopter to Level 1 Trauma Center Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville with serious injuries.

Alyssa Popp is accused of being under the influence of marijuana and prescription drugs at the time of the crash.
