The Best Things to Do This Week, According to Our Editors: Nov. 22

Thanksgiving baking, football bowling and more make our editor picks this week.

1. Try Some Football Bowling at First and Bowl

CHRIS DROSNER, EXECUTIVE EDITOR

It’s getting cold, so the sixth-graders need things to do that ARE. NOT. VIDEO GAMES. Sheesh, you guys, move a little. The solution this Saturday night was our first try at First and Bowl, a bar and activity gym built around football bowling. This game is exactly what it sounds – knock the pins down with a football thrown at range – and fun for our group of mostly dads. The kids, less interested in games with rules, enjoyed the Connect Four basketball. My highlight was the comically oversized bags/cornhole game requiring you to fling pizza-box-sized beanbags 20-some feet. (There’s also a set of normal-sized bags.) Just $10 a head gets you in for unlimited games (you can also pay to reserve a lane), and there are coin-operated video games, pool and darts available as well. A full bar and a kitchen and screens showing sports extended the fun.

2. Shop at Paloma Wilder’s Bond Bracelets

CHELSEA MAMEROW, ART DIRECTOR

I am extremely loyal with my jewelry. Once I put it on, I rarely switch it up. There are a few favorite rings I occasionally rotate through. For our wedding anniversary last December my husband gave me a necklace made by Milwaukee’s own Paloma Wilder and I haven’t taken it off since. So when I learned about her new Bond Bracelets I knew immediately that I would be getting one (or two or three — we’ll see!). The dainty gold bracelet is fit to your wrist and welded in place, no clasp. You keep it on until it wears thin and falls off or you decide you’ve had enough and cut it off, in which case you can make an appointment to have a clasp added. Visit palomawilder.com/bond to pick your chain and make an appointment.

3. Bake Something With Pumpkin

ANN CHRISTENSON, SENIOR DINING EDITOR

There’s going to be a lot of baking in my house this week, but one of the things I won’t be making is pumpkin pie. It sounds like sacrilege, I know, but I’m not a fan. You will, however, see pumpkin featured on our T-giving table. I plan to make Justin Chapple’s (of Food & Wine) pumpkin cheesecake bars with caramel swirl. I just need to figure out my water bath situation. Some cheesecakes call for baking the cake in a water bath. The trick is that the pan holding the cheesecake is put inside a larger pan and enough water is added to the roasting pan to reach halfway up the side of the cheesecake pan. Right now, I don’t know have a roasting pan large enough to accommodate a 9-by-13-inch pan. But I’ll figure it out!

4. Try This Apple Pie Recipe

ALLISON GARCIA, DIGITAL EDITOR

Some say Thanksgiving is a pumpkin pie holiday, but not me. For me, it’s all about apple pie. And not just any apple pie, but Grandma Ople’s tried and true recipe. It’s saucy and delicious, which is why I’ve been tasked to bake four for Thansgiving this year. I like to use a mix of granny smiths and honeycrisps apples and cut the sugar a smidge, to let the flavor of the apples shine.

5. Read A Bathroom Book for People Not Pooping or Peeing but Using the Bathroom as an Escape by Joe Pera

ARCHER PARQUETTE, MANAGING EDITOR

Joe Pera is a national treasure. The standup comedian looks like a 30-year-old, but talks and acts like a man much older, standing with a little hunch and always fidgeting with his pockets on stage. His television show, “Joe Pera Talks With You” is one of the best things on air right now. It’s set in the Upper Peninsula, and season two saw Joe coming down to Milwaukee for a trip to the big city. His new illustrated book is all about finding refuge in the bathroom in the midst of turmoil. It’s a delight.
