Lake County Sheriff’s deputies and firefighters and paramedics from Countryside Fire Protection District responded about 1:25 p.m. Sunday, November 21, 2021 to a report of a crash involving a minivan and a freight train on Gilmer Road east of the intersection of Gilmer Road and North Midlothian Road in Ela Township near Mundelein.

The driver of the minivan did not initially report any injuries.

Two tracks switch to one track about 300 feet northeast of the grade crossing of the Canadian National Railway at Gilmer Road. A freight train was stopped on a side track to the east of the grade crossing while another freight train was headed southwest on the main track.

A witness said the driver of the minivan disobeyed the crossing gates and flashing light and didn’t look down the track. The driver may have actually crashed into the side of the train the instant that it passed.
