Warrant Issued for Murder Suspect in Death of Melanie Yates in Zion

Members of the Lake County Major Crime Task Force and Zion Police Department have been conducting extensive investigation into the shooting death of Melanie Yates. During the course of their investigation, detectives determined Zechariah C. Myles, 16, of the 2800 block of Enoch Avenue, Zion, exited his home and began recklessly shooting a rifle at another individual. Yates was struck by a stray round and tragically killed in her home. She was not the intended target of the shooting.




On Thursday, October 21, 2021, detectives obtained an arrest warrant for Myles for first degree murder. A Lake County Judge set bond on the warrant at $3,000,000.00. Although he is 16 years of age, Myles is being charged as an adult.

Detectives have been actively attempting to apprehend Myles since the issuance of the warrant, however, it is believed he is actively working to avoid apprehension. Myles is approximately 5’5,” 135 pounds, with brown eyes, and black hair.

The Lake County Major Crime Task Force has turned this case back over to Zion Police Department. Any further information regarding this investigation will be disseminated by Zion Police.

On Sunday, October 17, 2021, at approximately 9:00 p.m., Zion Police Officers were dispatched to a residence in the 2800 block of Enoch Avenue, Zion, for a report of shots fired. Zion Police Officers arrived and located evidence indicating several shots were fired near the roadway.




Zion Police Officers also determined a 23-year-old woman of Zion was struck by a stray round and she did not appear to be an intended target. The woman was inside of her home when struck by the round. She was transported to an area hospital with extremely critical injuries, and was later pronounced dead.

Due to the nature of the incident, Zion Police Department requested the assistance of the Lake County Major Crime Task Force. Members of the Task Force continue investigating along with Zion Police Detectives.
