Crash Injures 8 at Route 12 and Riverside Island Dr in Fox Lake

Fox Lake police officers and firefighters and paramedics from Fox Lake Fire Protection District responded about 12:10 p.m. Sunday, November 7, 2021 to a report of a head-on crash with injuries at 152 North Route 12 (Route 12 and Riverside Island Drive) in Fox Lake.




Battalion 22 on arrival with Ambulance 222 reported two vehicle with heavy damage with no fire, and one person down on the ground. Two additional ambulances were requested to the scene by 12:14 p.m. — one from Fox Lake and one from Spring Grove.

Police, firefighters, and paramedics on arrival discovered eight people injured in a crash involving two vehicles.

A 3 year-old girl, who was in a car seat, was transported by a LifeNet medical helicopter to Level 1 Trauma Center Advocate Lutheran General Hospital. A landing zone was established about 3.5 miles southeast of the crash scene at the Fox Lake Jewel-Osco parking lot at 1350 US-12. The LifeNet helicopter lifted off about 1:10 p.m. for the trip to Level 1 Trauma Center Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge.




Among the additional seven crash victims …

Another child was transported to Northwestern Medicine McHenry Hospital with injuries initially believed to be non-life-threatening.

An adult female was transported to Level 1 Trauma Center Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville with a leg fracture.

Five other crash victims were also transported Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville.

Among the total of eight patients, two were assessed with possible serious injuries. Paramedic crews from Lake Villa, McHenry, and Wauconda were also assigned to the scene to treat and transport crash victims.

The crash scene was located just west of the bridge over Nippersink Lake where the Lake County Sheriff Marine Unit is also stationed nearby on Riverside Island Drive.

Route 12 (US-12) was closed in both directions until about 4:30 p.m. for an extended crash investigation. The Lake County Major Crash Assistance Team (MCAT) was assigned to the scene to assist with the investigation by the Fox Lake Police Department.

The initial investigation indicates that the driver of a black Dodge SUV was following a Toyota sedan northbound on US-12 WEST. When the driver of the Toyota sedan slowed down to turn into a driveway, the driver of the Dodge SUV swerved into the oncoming southbound lane(s) to avoid a crash with the Toyota, and instead crashed head-on with a silver Jeep SUV that was southbound on US-12 EAST. Both the Dodge SUV and the Jeep SUV had severe front-end damage.

US-12 is two lanes in each direction with a left turn lane from southbound US-12 EAST to northeastbound Riverside Island Drive.
