Arlington Heights report they arrested Antonio Woods, age 37, about 4:01 p.m. Monday, November 1, 2021 at the Shell gas station, 3 West Algonquin Road. Police on patrol initiated their own investigation when they saw Antonio Woods run across a roadway from a motel with a posture and manner that indicated he may be carrying a gun. Police apprehended Woods, although he resisted arrest. Arlington Heights police recovered a .22 caliber firearm.

Antonio Woods is charged with being an Armed Habitual Criminal (Class X Felony), Unlawful Use or Possession of a Weapon by a Felon (Class 3 Felony), and Misdemeanor Resisting a Peace Officer.

According to the Illinois Department of Corrections, Antonio Woods was sentenced to 8 years in prison at the East Moline Correctional Center following a conviction of the charges of Aggravated Battery/Discharge of a Firearm and Possession of a Firearm by a Felon. Woods was taken into custody on August 30, 2013 connected to the charges. He had previous convictions of felony Possession of a Controlled Substance after arrests in 2012 (served 2 years), 2009 (served 3 years), and 2004 (served 2 years).

Antonio Woods was paroled on June 18, 2020 after about 2 years in prison since June 14, 2018. Woods has a listed residential address in Westchester, Illinois — a suburb east of Elmhurst near the I-290/I-294 interchange.

In a statement provided by the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office and quoted in the Daily Herald on Friday, November 5, 2021, Assistant Cook County State’s Attorney Vijay Sharma described the scene at Arlington Heights Road and Algonquin Road as a “high crime area.”

In an outgoing phone call on Saturday, November 6, 2021 about 3:28 p.m. from CARDINAL NEWS to Vijay Sharma, the state’s attorney rudely hung up without comment while CARDINAL NEWS was mid-sentence inquiring about his “high crime area” comment. Considering the disconnection could have been a cellular dropped call, CARDINAL NEWS called back twice. There was a second hangup, and then on the third call, Sharma answered again, saying, “I hung up on you twice, can’t you take a hint?” Surprised at the unprofessional response from the male voice on the phone, CARDINAL NEWS asked if this was the Vijay Sharma that is a Cook County Assistant State’s Attorney. He replied that the phone number belonged to his private attorney’s office that no longer exists, and that he works for the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office. He said, “Lose this number, this isn’t my office anymore.” Apparently his phone number available on the Internet on a microblogging and social networking site was obsolete for his private office, but still referred to his cell phone. Sharma’s Linkedin states he’s been with the Cook County State’s Attorney’s office since July 2018.

According to the Cook County Sheriff’s Office, the booking date for parolee and suspect Antonio Woods was November 5, 2021, and he is detained at Cook County Jail Division 5. Woods was held on $200,000.00 bond, and his next scheduled court date is Tuesday, November 23, 2021.
