American Airlines on Saturday, October 30, 2021 reported the airline canceled more than 1,400 flights over the weekend due to staff shortages and unfavorable weather. The U.S. airline said it canceled 376 flights on Friday, 551 flights on Saturday, and 480 flights on Sunday.

“With additional weather throughout the system, our staffing begins to run tight as crew members end up out of their regular flight sequences.”

American Airline expects to hire more employees, and on Monday, October 25, 2021 tweeted a statement saying, “(w)hen the U.S. reopens to more international travelers on Nov. 8, we’ll be ready to welcome you back with our partners and nearly 6x more flights between the U.S. & the U.K. & almost 3x as many between the U.S. & Spain as any other alliance. Get ready to reconnect with the world!”

American Airlines stated that staffing is increasing across all operations, with nearly 1,800 flight attendants returning from leave and more than 600 newly hired flight attendants beginning work by the end of December 2021.

Around Monday, October 11, 2021, Southwest canceled almost 2,400 flights over a three-day period, blaming unfavorable weather and air traffic issues in Florida. However, skeptics claimed the cancellations were caused by staffing irregularities connected to the COVID-19 vaccine mandate. On Tuesday, October 26, 2021, Judge Barbara Lynn, Chief Judge of the United States District Court Northern District of Texas, denied the request by the Southwest Airlines Pilots Association (SWAPA) to issue a temporary restraining order regarding a December 8, 2021 vaccine requirement. Judge Barbara Lynn dismissed the case.
