DETROIT — Mike Lucci, a six-time team captain with the Detroit Lions in the late-1960s and early 1970s, died Tuesday at 81 years old.

Lucci was one of the Lions' best defensive players for the better part of a decade. He was a second-team All-Pro selection in 1969 and made his only Pro Bowl in 1971.

"We are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Mike Lucci, whose passion for life was felt by all who knew him," Lions owner Sheila Ford Hamp said in a statement. "Many will remember Mike for his toughness as a player during his nine seasons with the Lions, earning Pro Bowl honors in 1971 and being named the team’s defensive MVP three times.

"His positive presence as a leader within our Lions legends community made him a familiar face to all, and his willingness to give back will always be part of his great legacy. We extend our heartfelt sympathies to his wife, Patricia, and the entire Lucci family.”

Lucci played his first three NFL seasons for the Cleveland Browns and was sent to the Lions in a three-team trade in 1965. He finished his career with 21 interceptions and 123 starts in 154 games.

Lucci, who raised more than $2 million for local children through a charity golf tournament he ran for 30 years, battled an extended illness before his death.

Lucci is the third Lions legend to pass away in recent months. Defensive lineman Roger Brown died in September at the age of 84, and receiver/punter Pat Studstill died earlier in October at age 83.
