WITH HALLOWEEN APPROACHING, it’s the perfect time to curl up on the couch with some popcorn and a horror classic. We asked three local horror hosts for recommendations for a spooky good time.

1.

Deadgar Winter

ABBOTT AND COSTELLO MEET FRANKENSTEIN (1948)

The comedy duo encounters Dracula (Bela Lugosi), the Wolfman (Lon Chaney Jr.), and Frankenstein’s monster (Glenn Strange). “It has all the Universal actors in it, and it shows comedy can mix with horror. It really set the stage.”

2.

Celeste Parker

FREAKS (1932)

Todd Browning’s controversial film stars actual circus performers. Celeste’s favorite scene is a rainy, slow-moving chase where the performers stalk down the movie’s villains. “The way it was shot is iconic and terrifying, but still keeps empathy for the ‘freaks.’”

3.

Dr. Destruction

DR. JEKYLL AND MR. HYDE (1931)

“It’s the ultimate horror film of that period. Frederic March is the only actor to win an Academy Award for playing a monster,” Dr. Destruction says of the Racine native’s portrayal of the title role.
