Introducing Brand Rights Protection: Helping Protect Brands and Consumers from Counterfeits

Today we’re announcing Brand Rights Protection, an updated tool formerly known as the Commerce & Ads IP Tool. Brand Rights Protection provides brands with new features to better protect their intellectual property (IP), ultimately helping consumers avoid counterfeit products.

Over the years, we’ve built a robust IP program that includes a global IP notice-and-takedown team, specialized reporting tools, and proactive measures. The new Brand Rights Protection reflects our deep commitment to this work and continued investment in tooling and collaborative relationships to support businesses and protect their brands.

Brand Rights Protection allows enrolled trademark owners to search and report content they believe infringes on their IP rights and now offers features to streamline and automate the process. With this update, brands can upload and save up to 10 images to their account, such as logos or product images. Our enhanced image-matching technology will then automatically scan ads on Facebook and Instagram so brands can more easily review and report potentially infringing content.

For the first time, we’re also expanding the use of this tool beyond commerce and ads, giving brands the ability to search and report Instagram accounts and the posts they think may be infringing on their rights. This was previously only available for advertisements, in sale posts from Shops, Marketplace and buy/sell groups.

As we continue to expand features to help businesses protect their brands, we’re also increasing transparency into our review of IP reports. We’re now providing brands with a dashboard of the information they need to manage their brand protection efforts. Brands can use the new dashboard to view the detailed status of their IP reports, including whether a report was actioned on.

Choosing the Right IP Tool for Your Needs

Brand Rights Protection helps prevent the sale of counterfeit products by allowing businesses, from the largest of global brands to independently owned online shops, to search for and report IP infringement across Facebook and Instagram. The tool offers the ability to report infringing content across Instagram posts, Marketplace and Shops that may mislead consumers. In addition to Brand Rights Protection, we offer Rights Manager, an automated matching technology that gives creators the ability to manage and protect their copyrighted content. Brand Rights Protection and Rights Manager provide unique features to support rights holders, who may use one or both of these tools, depending on the type of IP rights they wish to protect.

Rights Manager helps creators and publishers determine if their content is being shared without permission -- it works by searching Facebook and Instagram for matches to content a rights holder uploaded to the tool, such as video or audio from a pirated TV show or movie, or images by a professional photographer. Rights holders can take a number of actions on matching content, from monitoring to requesting that we remove it. Visit our Business Help Center to learn more about which IP tool is right for you.

Whether through Rights Manager, Brand Rights Protection, or both, Facebook and Instagram remain committed to keeping intellectual property safe. We hope these updates will help people to shop with confidence across our family of apps through the holiday season and beyond.
