The Top 10 Things to Do in Milwaukee This October

Enjoy the return of live theater, along with some outdoor fun.

1. The Full Monty

THROUGH OCT. 17 | SKYLIGHT MUSIC THEATRE

When his 1997 film of the same name − about out-of-work steel workers who give stripping a go − became a sleeper hit, Simon Beaufoy decided to turn the script into a play. The result is a musical comedy that’s just as campy and endearingly irreverent as its source material. It opens Skylight’s 2021-22 season, with the theatre planning to be back at full capacity again.

2. “María Magdalena Campos-Pons: Sea and Self”

THROUGH DEC. 19 | HAGGERTY MUSEUM OF ART

The sea has been a lifelong preoccupation of the Cuban- born visual and performance artist María Magdalena Campos-Pons. It appears in her drawings, photographs and installations. And through it she explores the idea that the ocean represents both loss and memory, life and death.

3. Milwaukee County Zoo Free Day

OCT. 2 | MILWAUKEE COUNTY ZOO

Lions and tigers and bears, oh my! You’ll still have to pay to park at the zoo today, but your admission will be completely free. Which means you’ll have more to spend on snacks and souvenirs after meeting a few of your favorite animals.

Now celebrating its 40th year, this historic race starts and ends near Lake Michigan, at the Henry Meier Festival Grounds. And it’s a Boston Marathon qualifying course.

5. Hasan Minhaj

OCT. 3 | RIVERSIDE THEATER

Comedian Hasan Minhaj first rose to prominence as a “Daily Show” correspondent. Since then, he’s hosted his own Netflix show, “Patriot Act,” and snapped up a pair of Peabody and Webby Awards. Audience members will be asked to leave their phones with security before entering the theater.

6. Sunset Kayak Tour

OCT. 7 | 318 S. WATER ST.

Enjoy one more evening on the water before it gets too cold. A Milwaukee Kayak Company guide will lead paddlers on a sunset tour of the Menomonee River, past the Harley-Davidson Museum and other sites.

7. Hamilton

OCT. 13-24 | MARCUS PERFORMING ARTS CENTER

It’s still not too late to see what might just end up being the most beloved Broadway musical of a generation. After a not-so-brief hiatus, Lin-Manuel Miranda’s Tony-winning modern masterpiece Hamilton has finally returned to Milwaukee.

9. Connect

OCT. 28-31 | MILWAUKEE BALLET AT MARCUS PERFORMING ARTS CENTER

Enjoy contemporary pieces by three different acclaimed choreographers from around the globe when the Milwaukee Ballet makes its 51st season debut at the refurbished Marcus Center.

10. Pre-1975 Car Show

OCT. 31 | BEST PLACE AT THE HISTORIC PABST BREWERY

Hop into your vintage Corvette or Thunderbird and cruise on down to the Pabst Brewery complex for a unique car show supported by the Rebel Rousers, TroubleShooters and the Wisco Maniacs car clubs. The family-friendly show boasts live music, a full bar with cheap beer, and lots and lots of classic cars.
