How to Carve the Pumpkin From Our ‘Scream City’ Cover

Looking for a Milwaukee-themed pumpkin carving design? Consider the one the cover of our October issue.

This month’s cover is one our favorites! We started with the idea of carving a pumpkin, but were struggling to pick the right headline. Editorial designer Kristin Bowker came up with “Boo City,” playing off “Brew City,” which prompted executive editor Chris Drosner to suggest “Scream City.” It was so perfect that it ended the headline discussion immediately.

We ordered a 17-inch Funkin (a carvable foam pumpkin) and commissioned Whitney Anderson, a graphic designer who coincidentally grew up on a pumpkin farm in Illinois, to create this design. With some help from photographer CJ Foeckler and the official MilMag fog machine, we turned it into the spooky image you see on October’s cover.

Feeling inspired? Print out a stencil of this design and try it yourself.
