RAIPUR: Amid the frantic firefighting in Punjab, Congress found itself dragged into the Chhattisgarh power struggle on Wednesday when around 15 party MLAs — loyalists of CM Bhupesh Baghel — landed in Delhi in the evening, apparently to lobby against any change of guard in the state.
Congress has 70 of 90 seats in the Chhattisgarh assembly but has plunged from one crisis to another in the past couple of months due to a tussle for the top post.On WednesAmid the frantic firefighting in Punjab, Congress found itself dragged into the Chhattisgarh power struggle on Wednesday when around 15 party MLAs — loyalists of CM Bhupesh Baghel — landed in Delhi in the evening, apparently to lobby against any change of guard in the state.
Meanwhile the party high command was in damage control mode after Navjot Singh Sidhu’s resignation, Congress MLAs owing allegiance to Baghel left for Delhi on separate flights, said sources.

Many of the MLAs maintained that they were on personal trips, but sources indicated that they have sought a meeting with the Congress high command.
“Some 15 MLAs are now in Delhi. I don’t know whether they have gone with any specific agenda or on personal visits,” said a state Congress committee functionary.

Asked about this, state health minister T S Singhdeo told reporters: “We all know what discussion is going on in Chhattisgarh politics at present. Now, it’s an open discussion on whether there is a possibility of change after the MLAs went to Delhi the last time.”

“Maybe, they have gone to present their views. If someone says they have gone to invite the central leadership to visit Chhattisgarh and see the development here, the chief minister has already extended his invitation. Even if I go and invite, the reply I will get is that it would be discussed with the chief minister,” Singhdeo added.
The tussle is over a purported formula, following the 2018 victory, for a change of guard in Chhattisgarh after two and a half years. Singhdeo’s loyalists believe it is his turn to be CM now.
