KOLKATA: The
Election Commission on Monday sought an urgent report from the Bengal government after a scuffle between
Trinamool and
BJP supporters around former state BJP chief Dilip Ghosh near Jadubabur Bazar here on the last day of campaigning for the Bhowanipore bypoll.
Personnel in Ghosh’s central security cover brought out firearms and formed a ring around him as he complained of being “kicked and pushed around”.
Trinamool supporters, however, alleged that Ghosh went to a local vaccination centre to canvas for votes, prompting “local residents” to protest.
Ghosh, according to witnesses, entered the Debendra Ghosh Road neighbourhood a little after 11.30 pm, speaking to Bhowanipore voters and distributing BJP leaflets. He then entered a vaccination camp to distribute leaflets, prompting a few Trinamool supporters to barrack him.
Ghosh’s PSOs then formed a protective ring around him and brought out their firearms. BJP alleged that there was an attack on Ghosh.
