Canela Café Is Downer Avenue’s New Breakfast Joint

Chicken and waffles is just one of the delicious dishes on the menu.

Downer Avenue has a dedicated breakfast spot once again. Canela Café (2621 N. Downer Ave.) is now serving up morning fuel inside the former Original Pancake House, which closed last January.

Owners Dina and Ray Awadallah – who worked at El Beso Mexican restaurant in Greenfield and the breakfast spot Mad Rooster Cafe on 44th and Greenfield Avenue – have built a menu that combines American breakfast/lunch/brunch standards and Mexican-inspired specialties. Menu items include pancakes, waffles, various styles of omelets and eggs benedict, breakfast bowls, salads, healthy choices, plus more elaborate creations.
