Stringent controls mitigate virus risks

September 4, 2021

Secretary for Food & Health Prof Sophia Chan today said Hong Kong has stringent border control measures in place to mitigate the risk of transmitting COVID-19 mutant strains in the community.

Asked at a media session about the risk posed by the new Mu strain to the community, Prof Chan said the Government treats new variants, variants of concern or any COVID-19 virus in a prudent manner.

“The most important thing is that we have very stringent border control measures all the way from before the inbound travellers come to Hong Kong.”

She also pointed out that inbound travellers have to fulfil certain virus testing and quarantine requirements, adding that there is also the flight suspension mechanism in place.

“So with all these stringent border control measures, we will continue to review the global situation in terms of these variants' activities.”

Regarding the proposed changes to the Medical Registration (Amendment) Bill 2021 to attract more qualified non-locally trained doctors to practise in Hong Kong, Prof Chan emphasised that the proposed amendments will not lower the professional standards required of these doctors.
