The “Inside Out 11M” art initiative is setting up a photo booth truck outside Chase Tower (111 E. Wisconsin Ave.) from 10 a.m.-6:30 p.m today.
Everyone is invited to have their portrait taken and added to the initiative’s project. The photos will be printed out at 36×53 inches and installed on the pavement outside the Tower and the RiverWalk.
The “Inside Out 11M” initiative is “a global participatory art project … to pay tribute to the power and dignity of individuals by displaying their portraits in public spaces around the world.” It comes to Milwaukee as part of Downtown BID #21’s “JumpstART” summer campaign, which has been behind other public art installations, like the Schlitz Park Mural.

The 11M in the initiative’s title is a reference to the 11 million undocumented immigrants in the U.S. The project will “underscore public support for creating a pathway to citizenship for the 11 million,” according to a press release.
The initiative will also stop in Madison, Las Vegas, Denver, Philadelphia and Washington, D.C. on a tour around the country. The initiative, which was started by JR, a French artist, has been active for over a decade, and more than 400,000 people from 138 countries have participated.
The final installation of the portraits taken today will happen at 6:30 p.m., with live music accompanying the event. The installation will remain on display at the plaza until this Monday, Aug. 30.
