NADI-based boutique salt producer is partnering with a Pacific Harbour non-governmental organisation that provides cooked meals to families in need.

South Seas Salt has pledged a monthly donation of artisan salt to First Responders, an NGO that has so far cooked and delivered more than 2000 meals to needy families in the Navua- Pacific Harbour corridor.

“First Responders cooks and delivers 100 hot meals a week to communities in need,” said founder Sarah Conrad.

“The partnership with South Seas Salt is a huge boost in terms of being able to use healthier ingredients in our meals.

“We work directly with Government through the Provincial Administrator Navua and key district advisory councillors to identify those in need.”

South Seas Salt Fiji is the brainchild of Alex and Will Garland, who are originally from the UK but now hold dual citizenship, having lived in Fiji for the past 20 years.

Their diving business at Tokoriki Island Resort was immediately impacted when the second wave of COVID-19 hit, and Ms Garland said they just celebrated their first year with their sea salts coming on to the market at the beginning of this month.

“We had run a tourist business for 21 years and overnight we lost everything,” she said.

“Starting up a new venture might seem crazy, but we feel that if we can survive these difficult times, then we will be strongly situated when borders reopen.

“From the get-go we have been firmly focused on the long-term future.”

South Seas Salt has pledged to donate handmade artisan sea salt to the value of about $100 each month to First Responders for as long as it is needed.

She said they chose to pledge support because, like thousands of Fijians who worked in tourism, they had also lost their livelihood because of COVID-19.

“Many of our friends and colleagues who are hardworking, clever, honest and resourceful are having a really difficult time.

“While we’d love to help financially, the truth is that we simply don’t have the money to help them, and because we are working so hard to try to build our new venture South Seas Salt, we haven’t got the time either.

“What we can do though is give some beautiful natural sea salt, which will help the chefs of First Responders to make the food they prepare for their 100 meals program, taste amazing.”

South Seas Salt relies 100 per cent on sun and wind to turn saltwater into artisan sea salt, leaving no carbon footprint and ensuring their salt is full of sea mineral goodness with no minerals being lost in this natural process.

“South Seas Salt is made sustainably using just sun and wind. South Seas Salt is available for ale online directly from South Seas Salt Fiji social media pages, or from Indulge Fiji, The Coffee Hub, Victoria Wines, Aggie Global, The Projects Fiji and My Fiji Store.
