National 7s men’s team captain Jerry Tuwai was yesterday given a new car by a rugby fan.
Daniel Sharma, owner of Veiwekani Taxi in Nadera, said he wanted to give Tuwai a present after all he had done for the country.
Sharma said after seeing the boys in tears before the final in Tokyo last month, he told his wife that if the team won the final he would give something to captain Tuwai.
“I told my wife I will buy Jerry a car if the team wins,” Sharma said after the presentation yesterday.
“I went through his profile and saw the hard life he came through with his parents, I believe I have done something good for them and made them happy.
“I am also happy that I am given this chance to give Jerry something for all he has done for the people of Fiji,” he said.
Tuwai while thanking Sharma said he told his boys after the win in Japan that the victory was for the people of Fiji.
“After the final, I was given an opportunity to speak to the boys and I told them, we should be proud of what we had achieved,” he said.
“We must not expect the Government or the people of Fiji to give something back to us.
“This win is for the people of Fiji, not for us, it’s their team, not ours.
“After we celebrate this win, we must be humble and put our feet back on the ground,” the Macuata man said.
Tuwai also told his players they should be proud as Olympians because they were a beacon of hope for our people who are suffering from the effects of COVID-19.
The car, with plate number 2GOLD, is part of the many pledges of assistance being given to the national men’s and women’s 7s players after their gold and bronze medal wins.
