The owners of Donut Monster – known for its spot in Whitefish Bay (5169 N. Elkhart Ave.) and for selling its product at the Shorewood and Tosa Farmers Markets – are opening their Third Ward space (316 N. Milwaukee St.) on Thursday, Aug. 19. The pastry joint specializes in doughnut flavors like chocolate vanilla buttercream, lemon poppy and blueberry cheesecake and in breakfast sandwiches made on homemade English muffins. (FYI, those sandwiches are really good.)
The Third Ward space they’re in, which will function as the business’ headquarters, is also known for sweets. It’s the former home of Holey Moley Coffee & Doughnuts (now permanently closed) and, going further back in time, Harlequin Bakery.
Check the Donut Monster’s Facebook page to find out what’s available from week to week on the menu. Some recent doughnut finds are Japanese caramel and banana creme brulee. Wow!

Also sharing the Third Ward space is Brute Pizza, which Donut Monster’s Jackie Woods owns with Paris Dreibelbis. The chefs worked together years ago at Ardent and have been serving pop-up pies out of the Whitefish Bay bakery for some time now. The chefs make their 12-inch sourdough pizza crust from heritage, stone-milled flour. The crust has a thick, chewy border and makes a lovely platform for toppings like pepperoni, bell and peppadew peppers and Pleasant Ridge cheese (varieties $15-$18). The pizzas aren’t available this week at the Third Ward location but will be coming soon.
