Cameron Burrell, son of former 100 metre sprint world record holder Leroy Burrell, has died aged 26, the cause of which is unknown.

The sprint prodigy had won several golds including consecutive NCAA wins in the 4x100 metre relay in 2017 and 2018.

News of the death was announced by Burrell's family but no cause was given.

"My family is extremely sad over the loss of our son Cameron, last night [August 9, 2021]", said father Leroy Burrell. "We are suffering deeply and ask our friends, the University of Houston family and the US athletic community to let us be with our close friends and family at this time."

Born into an Olympic family, Burrell's father was ex world record holder in the 100-metre sprint and his mother, Michelle Finn-Burrell, was a gold medallist in the relay at Barcelona 1992.

His aunt, Dawn Burrell, also competed in the long jump at Sydney 2000 and his godfather, Carl Lewis, was a nine-time Olympic champion.
