The Fiji Police Force has urged members of the public to be aware of fire hazards in and around their homes after recording two recent house fires.

Police spokesman Wame Bautolu said a farmhouse belonging to a 39-year-old woman was destroyed in a fire from a nearby sugar cane field at Naboutini, Sabeto in Nadi on Sunday.

“The estimated cost of damage is around $7000 and investigations are continuing,” he said.

In a separate incident, Mr Bautolu said a home at Mangu Maharaj Place in Kinoya, Nasinu was partially destroyed in a fire at midday yesterday.

“The occupants managed to escape unharmed and joint investigations with the National Fire Authority (NFA) are continuing.

“To date, the Fiji Police Force has recorded 60 cases of structural fires from January 1st to August 9th, 2021.”

He said the majority of the cases reported so far were a result of electrical faults or unattended fire hazards.

“If you are planning on leaving your homes vacant, please take the time to check for fire hazards and turn off all electrical appliances.

“When you are home, please continue to check all potential fire hazards as accidents can and do happen.”
