New RM200m water plant for Sipitang?
Sipitang: A new water treatment plant needs to be built in the district as a long-term measure to resolve the water supply problem faced by the people. State Education and Innovation Minister Datuk Dr Yusof Yacob said the demand for water here has increased following new developments and a long-term solution is needed.

"We have planned several strategies to resolve the problem, including by increasing the water treatment capacity and building a new water treatment plant.

The location for the proposed new plant is Ulu Sungai Lukutan and it is estimated to cost RM200 million. We hope it will get immediate allocation from the Government," he said.

Dr Yusof, who is also Sindumin Assemblyman, said this to reporters when visiting the Mesapol water treatment plant here, Thursday, his second since May this year. District Officer Matlin Dullah, Assistant District Water Engineer Sanip Mokti and community leaders were also present.

According to Dr Yusof, the water supply problem here was attributed to the decreasing river water level, low pump capacity and damaged pump at the water treatment plant in Ulau.

"We found that the decreasing water level of the river has resulted in a drop in the amount of water pumped into the water treatment plant in Mesapol. To solve this, we will have to deepen the waterway flowing into the dam to be sucked into the processing pump. This will be done soonest possible," he said.

He said immediate action will also be taken to rectify the low capacity pump and broken pump problems.

"The second issue is the intake pump which pumps water to the supply reservoirs is not strong enough. We have agreed to replace the pump to a high capacity one, which is already available, and I will instruct the replacement work to be done immediately," he said. Dr Yusof said the water plant in Ulau was supposed to have three pumps but only two were operational right now.

"The other one has been sent for repair which we hope will be done fast. We hope when the pump is repaired, it can operate like normal," he said.
