NEW DELHI: More than a third of Air India’s 9,000 employees have so far been infected with Covid-19 and 56 of them them have lost their lives.
“A total of 3,523 employees of Air India have been affected by Covid-19. Out of (them), 56 employees succumbed to this pandemic till July 14, 2021,” Union minister of state for civil aviation V K Singh said in a written reply to a question in Lok Sabha on Thursday.
Air India had just over 9,000 employees last March.
The airline has been at the forefront of operating flights to first bring back Indians stranded abroad during the pandemic, a process which began last January when it flew two jumbo jets from Delhi to Wuhan to fly back Indians, mainly students, from there. General (retired) Singh said AI has taken various measures to safeguard the interests of Covid-affected employees and their families.
He said that Air India paid a compensation of Rs 10 lakh to the family of each permanent employee who died due to Covid-19. When a fixed-term contractual employee died due to Covid-19, AI paid his or her family a compensation of Rs 5 lakh, he added.
Employees infected with Covid-19 were granted a paid quarantine leave of 17 days, he said. “Reimbursement of vaccination charges are being provided to employees and their families if paid by them,” he said.
