Lake County Sheriff’s deputies and firefighters and paramedics from Long Grove, Buffalo Grove, and Lincolnshire responded about 4:10 p.m. Friday, July 9, 2021 to a report of a crash with entrapment in Long Grove across from The Grove Country Club in Long Grove.

Lake County Sheriff’s Deputies arrived and located a red 2005 Toyota Camry with major damage. Long Grove Squad 55’s crew on arrival reported a single vehicle crash with confirmed entrapment. The driver, a 28-year-old man of Buffalo Grove, was the sole occupant. He sustained major injuries in the crash and was pronounced deceased at the scene.

A tow truck wrecker was requested “urgent” at 4:27 p.m. to lift the wrecked vehicle off of a tree. The tree had a trunk with a diameter of about 24 inches. The tree trunk intruded beyond the engine compartment into the passenger area with the impact force of the crash.

The Lake County Coroner’s Office responded and scheduled an examination of the victim on Monday, July 12, 2021.

Preliminary investigation shows the driver of the red Toyota Camry was traveling southwest on Route 53. There is a slight left-hand curve in the roadway for westbound traffic just southwest of Robert Parker Coffin Road. For an unknown reason, he failed to properly negotiate the curve. The vehicle veered off the roadway onto the north side of Route 53 and struck the large tree trunk approximately 10 feet north of the shoulder of the roadway.

Near the scene of the crash, Illinois Route 53 is a two-lane rural type highway with a narrow shoulder and a tree/brush line that is close to the shoulder with some hidden driveway, roadways and curves obscured by the tree/brush line. A “Curve Ahead” warning signed is posted with a 40 MPH limit ahead of the curve. Otherwise, Route 53 is posted with a 45 MPH Speed Limit, according to Google Maps Street View. A 45 MPH Speed Limit sign is located immediately at the end of curve near where the crash scene was located.

Route 53 was blocked in both directions between Shiloh Drive and Schaeffer Road east of Route 83. Route 53 was re-opened by about 8:10 p.m.
